Rideshare Info

A rideshare or carpool consists of 2 or more people sharing a ride in a car to travel to a common destination. Ridshares may involve one person who does all the driving, with riders paying for a share of fuel and maintenance costs. Drivers can also rotate equally, so that no money needs to change hands.

Types of Rideshares:

  • Long Distance Journeys - typically a trip to the Coast or to Calgary…or maybe to SanFrancisco or Tuscon. Don't forget to check postings to Kelowna, Penticton, Revelstoke, Golden, Cranbrook and other in-between destinations.

  • Local Rides - a trip of 2 hours or less close to home- maybe even to the hot springs, ski hill or trailhead!

  • Frequent/Commuter Trips - a trip you do on a regular basis, commuting to and from work or school every day, or a weekly 'town trip' for shopping and appointments.

Benefits of Ridesharing:

Ridesharing saves money:

The Canadian Automobile Association reports that the average yearly cost of operating a vehicle can be as high as $9,000 a year, or nearly $25/day!

Ridesharing can help you offset these costs.

Ridesharing reduces your Greenhouse Gas Emissions:

Greenhouse gases that are the result of burning fossil fuels are causing our Earth's climate to change at an alarming rate. and threatening our very survival. Road transportation is responsible for 46% of the average Canadian's personal greenhouse gas emissions.

Ridesharing with one other person can reduce the average commuter's greenhouse gas emissions by half a tonne to two tonnes per year!!

Ridesharing calms traffic:

Almost 80% of cars on Canadian roads are single occupancy vehicles! On average, over 18,000 vehicles travel into and out Nelson each day.

Ridesharing reduces traffic flow, making travel safer and less stressful for drivers.
