Tips for frequent/Commuter Trips

Before you begin ridesharing on a regular basis, be sure to have a conversation to get clear on some basic rules and guidelines. Will one person do all the driving and collect money from the riders, or will you rotate driving duties, without the need of cash to change hands?

Other questions include:

  • How often will you rideshare?
  • Where and when are the pick ups, and how long is the maximum wait time for latecomers? (5-10 minutes is standard for those commuting to work or school)
  • What are your "rules of the road" such as: radio/music preferences, food, coffee, smoking, perfume/cologne use, talking vs. reading, seating arrangements?
  • What about "Plan B"- alternate plans if someone is sick or has another personal emergency?

Make sure you get contact information for each member of the rideshare so that you can get in touch at short notice if plans change. An emergency contact person for each member is a good idea as well.

Drivers need to ensure they are keeping their vehicle properly maintained, and that they carry sufficient insurance. Third party liability of at least $1,000,000 is recommended, as well as underinsured motorist protection.

Another common rule is "No Side-trips"!! Unless your group agrees on this beforehand, it is unfair to ask others to wait while you do errands.
